The ink that shows up at the end of every trial. We know they're collecting it for some reason. There's some from murders, and some are from people completing their "objectives"... at least I'm rather certain on the latter. Since the Historians "know more about the game", that means that they think collecting more ink sooner rather than later is better. I believe the answer is simple. After we've reached a certain amount of ink collected, this whole thing will end.

Yes, that's, that's a very real possibility. But speaking of that book-- Tiger and Dragon are characters in that story. Just like we are supposedly from stories ourselves. If the "Crafters" are part of this too, then couldn't that mean there's someone else above them?
